  • Building resilience and coping mechanisms for future challenges
  • Understanding the definitions of challenging behaviour
  • Examining steps in setting clear parameters, managing post crisis situations and rebuilding relationships

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand behaviour at its different stages as a crisis develops and how to respond appropriately
  • Describe the developmental stages of challenging behaviour by using Stages of Distress and Support Model and what response is most effective
  • Understand the root causes of challenging behaviour, by using The Conflict Spiral Model.
  • Outline factors that influence behaviours and recognise the reciprocal nature of behaviour
  • Understand how to manage responses and how to de-escalate behaviours without taking behaviour personally
  • Understand the importance of both verbal and non-verbal communication and how this can be put into use when decelerating or de-escalating behaviour
  • Understand use of appropriate and acceptable disengagement skills
  • Understand the importance of post crisis work, looking at rebuilding relationships, reflecting on behaviours, investigating patterns and triggers and providing support to children and young people
